In a sign of times marred by police killings of unarmed black people and marked by anti-police brutality protests, all five Democrats have been eager to offer their opinions on just how the city should handle the police this primary season.

The five candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for Queens borough president gathered on a virtual stage for a debate hosted by QNS on Thursday, June 11.

Early voting began today — Saturday, June 13 — in the Democratic primary for Queens Borough President, a race that was triggered when the previous officeholder, Melinda Katz, was elected the borough’s district attorney last year and took office in January.

QNS will host a virtual debate with the candidates for Queens borough president on Thursday, June 11, from 7 to 8 p.m.

After a special election was cancelled, five Democratic candidates for Queens borough president — two elected officials, one former councilwoman, a former NYPD sergeant, and a businessman — will finally appear on the ballot this month in a primary.

Former Assistant District Attorney Jim Quinn officially dropped out of the race for Queens borough president on Friday, after legal challenges to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s executive order cancelling the special election fell flat.

The special election for Queens borough president has been canceled, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced last week. The election, which was originally scheduled for March 24, was postponed until June 23 before being canceled outright by the state’s executive order in an effort to fight the spread of COVID-19.
